Critical Thinking Skills
This two-day workshop is designed for anyone who wants to improve their process and success with problem solving, decision-making and problem prevention. The workshop is highly experiential. Participants will practice on provided cases and apply the concepts to a current business problem. The workshop will be lead by Kathleen Zielinski, a former consultant and trainer with Kepner-Tregoe and BPI.

Outline:

Problem Solving is the process of gathering, sorting, organizing, and analyzing information. It helps you to find the cause of a problem. The following topics will be discussed and practiced:

  • Define the problem - learn to focus and define a single deviation
  • Data collection - what questions should you ask, what information do you need to understand your problem
  • Possible Causes - learn to brainstorm for possible causes and to formulate if-then situations for analysis
  • Most probable cause - once you have gathered data, how do you identify the cause that makes the most sense
  • Verify your probable cause - discuss the necessary actions to verify your cause

Decision Making is the process of making a choice from a group of alternatives. The process provides a level of comfort and confidence with the decision you make. The following topics will be discussed and practiced:

  • Define your decision - learn to identify your decision in terms of result, timing and cost
  • Establishing criteria - what are the constraints and expectations for a successful alternative
  • Analyze criteria - we will learn to separate criteria into minimum requirements and desired expectations
  • Generate alternatives - learn to analyze alternatives to satisfy your criteria
  • Risk analysis - identify potential problems that will prevent a successful implementation of your best performing alternative
  • Make a balanced choice between performance and risk

Problem Prevention is a proactive process that identifies potential problems and appropriate preventive and contingent actions. The following topics will be discussed and practiced:

  • Potential problems - we will learn to identify and prioritize potential problems
  • Possible causes - systematic thinking requires us to identify possible causes
  • Preventive actions - what actions within our environment will block the cause
  • Contingent action - what actions make good contingencies, when do we implement them
