MACSTEEL Safety Manager Communication Skills Coaching
Jackson, Mi.,
May 2011, Gerdau MACSTEEL contracted with Everest Training & Consulting
to coach the Jackson Plant's high potential Plant Safety Manager to
improve his motivation and communication skills. "Our Safety Manager
has a ton of potential and sometimes his intensity to maintain our safety
record and prevent workers from injury is perceived as combative and
not respectful of someone's feelings" said Darrel Moore, Plant
Manager. "Safety is a no discussion, black and white issue at our
plant however we need Dave to temper his approach without compromising
the integrity of the great safety program he has installed in the Plant"
said Moore. Ed Pritchard, coaching consultant at Everest Training &
Consulting, reported, "Dave has a Driver, Developer type of personality
style however he was able to understand and implement some thought process
changes on his part that effected his interaction with plant personnel"
said Pritchard. For example, Dave described a situation where he observed
a plant team leader disregarding the safety glasses policy. Dave, said,
"luckily I had to walk about 50 feet to confront this individual
and during that time was able to use the self-talk messages that we
have discussed to not make the person a villain and not to make myself
a victim. As a result our confrontation was positive and during the
course of the shift he apologized four times for his initial reaction
to my reprimand" said Dave.
Everest Training &
Consulting is committed to enabling organizations to innovate to profitability:

through individual, professional, and personal growth.
